The Environmental Protection Agency has completed the years long process of phasing out the production of R-22 refrigerant, also known as “freon”. You may have seen or heard on local and national news that it will be illegal to manufacture R-22 after January 1st, 2020. Consequently, the cost of repairing air conditioning systems which require R-22 refrigerant will rise exponentially. Newer air conditioning systems use a more environmentally friendly refrigerant known as R-410A. Unfortunately, the two refrigerants are not compatible and cannot be mixed or used without expensive modifications to systems designed for R-22.
