This includes the primary drain pan switch, in-line with the drain line, and auxiliary drain pan switch. These float switches should be replaced regularly every 5 years to maximize reliability and protection from watershed events.
2. Surge Protection
As requirements for higher efficiency (SEER2 Rating) are implemented, the HVAC equipment is outfitted with more expensive electronics that are sensitive to power fluctuations. So, it is recommended that a customer with a split system (condenser outside and air handler inside) has an effective surge protector. While whole-home surge protectors are beneficial, point-of-contact surge protection is always best.
3. UV Light
The air handler is a dark space that’s damp due to the evaporator coil sweating when removing heat from the home. This makes it a natural breeding ground for biological growth, which can build up on the blower wheel, evaporator coil, and insulation inside the air handler cabinet.
By installing a UV light, it creates an unnatural environment for biological growth to occur. UV light is effective only where it can shine. Because of that, it’s best to have a dual-bulb system that shines on the blower wheel and the delta of the evaporator coil.
4. Drain Guard (or a similar drain line treatment system)
Algae growth in the drain line occurs naturally, more so in the summer months when the air conditioner runs more. This can lead to a clogged drain line, which is the top reason for a service call on equipment. It can also result in a watershed event if there’s no functioning float switch to trigger and shut off the equipment.
Drain Guard is a treatment installed in line with the HVAC drain line. It treats the condensate water leaving the air handler before it travels down the drain, reducing the amount of algae growth.
