Deciding whether or not to replace your air conditioner or heater is a big task. After all, this is an investment that you will live with for around 10 years. A lot of people tend to put off this purchase decision and say “NOPE, I can live with my finicky air conditioner or heater for a few more years.” But the real question is…can you? What is that choice going to cost you in the long run? Granted, you want to use your current system for as long as possible; there is no need to jump at this decision, but we want you to be prepared and looking for the warning signs. So…

Here are a few signs that will suggest it might be time to replace your current air conditioning and heating system:

1. Is your air conditioning and heating system over 10 years old?

Generally, the rule of thumb is that you should expect your air conditioner to last for about 10 years. However, since we live in Florida and the wear and tear is a bit worse, so you might want to start saving for a new system once it reaches its 8th birthday – just to be safe. If your air conditioner has lasted for over 10 years, it is losing efficiency and you have likely noticed a gradual rise in your energy costs. Installing a new and energy efficient system will not only keep you and your family more comfortable throughout the year, but it will also save you money on your energy bills.

2. Do you find yourself always calling to fix repairs?

Just like a vehicle, the mechanics of an air conditioning and heating system can get out of whack as the unit gets older. If you are frequently finding yourself in an uncomfortable house with a system that keeps breaking, it is time to consider the cost of continuing to fix the unit versus the cost of purchasing a new one.

3. Are some rooms always hotter or colder than the others?

This issue could be due to the fact that your system is getting older and isn’t able to work as well as it used to. This could also be due to inadequate insulation or improper duct work, so make sure you ask your Comfort Advisor for more details specific to your home and situation. 4. Is your system noisy?

Excessive noise could be caused by a few different scenarios, but if the repairs don’t work, consider that it might be time to save for a new air conditioning and heating system. In the past few years, air conditioners and heaters have become more quiet than ever. So, if you aren’t getting a good night’s sleep due to the “monster” outside your bedroom window, like in this video, it might be time to save for a newer, quieter and more efficient one.

5. Feeling too dry/sticky?

Humidity and comfort go hand-in-hand…especially in Florida. Your home should be an escape from the uncomfortable outside temperatures, not another place for the humidity to haunt you. If your air conditioning and heating system is not working correctly, one of the signs could be an issue with humidity (too much in the summer or too little in the winter).
